Let’s count to a billion!

on

We’ve done the basic counting from 0 to 99, now let’s add on more zeros to spice things up a little. One crucial rule is that in the Chinese and Japanese language, we group zeros in fours for  bigger numbers. Here are the rules:

2 zeros 100  一(yī)百(bǎi) a hundred

3 zeros   1000一(yī)千(qiān) a thousand

4 zeros   1,0000 一(yī)万(wàn) ten thousand

5 zeros   10,0000 十(shí)万(wàn) hundred thousand

6 zeros   100,0000一(yī)百(bǎi)万(wàn) a million

7 zeors   1000,0000  一(yī)千(qiān)万(wàn) ten million

8 zeros   1,0000,0000 一(yī)亿(yì) hundred million

9 zeros   10,0000,0000 十(shí)亿(yì)1000 a billion

How about the numbers in between? Well, again it requires simple maths. One special rule is to say “ling” when you see zero(s) in the middle of the number.

109 = 100 + 9 一(yī)百(bǎi)零(líng)九(jiǔ)

1009 = 1000 + 9 一(yī)千(qiān)零(líng)九(jiǔ)

1090 = 1000 + 90 一(yī)千(qiān)零(líng)九(jiǔ)十(shí)

10009 = 10000 + 9 一(yī)万(wàn)零(líng)九(jiǔ)

10099 = 10000 + 90 + 9 一(yī)万(wàn)零(líng)九(jiǔ)十(shí)九(jiǔ)

10999 = 10000 + 900+ 90 + 9 一(yī)万(wàn)零(líng)九(jiǔ)百(bǎi)九(jiǔ)十(shí)九(jiǔ)

So, keep in mind of the zeros in between and do your maths, we could easily count from zero to a billion!
